First walkers cross Perth’s Matagarup Bridge in advance of full opening

First walkers cross Perth’s Matagarup Bridge in advance of full opening
July 5, 2018

The first walkers, including Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan, officials and more than 100 workers, have become the first people to cross the new 350-metre-long Matagarup Bridge, connecting Perth’s new Optus Stadium and East Perth.

Seen as a key part of connecting the new venue and the city, and anticipated to revitalise East Perth, the new bridge has been subject to a number of construction delays.

Designed to represent a pair of Perth swans and resembling the form of a rollercoaster, workers, officials and, in the coming days, the general public are being invited to test the bridge in advance of its full opening for Fremantle AFL's clash against Port Adelaide at Optus Stadium on 15th July.

Part of the precinct plan for the new Stadium, the $91.5 million bridge was supposed to open towards the end of 2016. However, amid considerable delays the current Western Australian Government took ownership of the bridge in March last year, terminating the contract with the original Malaysian-based manufacturer.

The Bridge also includes a 70 metre high viewing platform above its central arch which will be a tourism attraction offering the opportunity to scale the structure and enjoy sweeping views over the Swan River, central Perth and Optus Stadium.
