Commonwealth Games Australia joins Sports Environment Alliance as its newest member

Commonwealth Games Australia joins Sports Environment Alliance as its newest member
July 31, 2025

Sports Environment Alliance (SEA) has welcomed Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) as its newest member with Craig Phillips CGA Chief Executive noting “joining SEA is important to CGA because we recognise the need to integrate environmental responsibility into our everyday work.”

As a leading voice in Australian sport, CGA recognises the critical importance of embedding climate and environmental considerations across all areas of its operations.

SEA and CGA are organisations focused on both athlete wellbeing and the planet, and through this membership will collaborate to share insights and implement practical approaches to environmental action.

Phillips adds “this membership gives CGA a chance to work with other leading sporting organisations, learn from their experience, and apply practical strategies to help reduce our impact. We want to play our part in a better future, and SEA is a valuable partner in that effort.

“CGA has already taken meaningful steps, including extensive consultation, to develop a detailed environmental, social and governance (ESG) framework and action plan.

“This is now being embedded across CGA’s operations and values. Environmental considerations are already informing decisions, for example, the procurement of team uniforms, and will continue to shape CGA’s decision-making.”

Margot Foster, Chair of SEA shared “Sport has a responsibility to lead by example. CGA’s membership of SEA reflects a growing recognition that the way we operate off the field matters just as much as what happens on it. We welcome CGA’s commitment and look forward to walking with them as this important sports leader takes practical steps to reduce its environmental impact and protect the places we all value.”

Adam Cheyne, SEA Chief Executive welcomed CGA to the growing group of members leading change across the sporting sector in Australia and added “Commonwealth Games Australia brings influence and leadership to our alliance. We welcome CGA’s commitment and look forward to supporting its work and learning from its approach. Together, we’re strengthening the role of sport in building an environmentally aware and climate-ready future for athletes, and the supporters of sport, whoever and wherever they may be.”
