read moreMelbourne’s latest public open space addition, a temporary ‘pop-up’ park, has opened on the corner of Elizabeth Street between Flinders Lane and Flinders Street.
The 375 metre² pop-up park includes feature lighting, trees, planter boxes, artificial turf and moveable street furniture.
Opening the public space, Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle stated “the corner of Elizabeth and Flinders Street is one of the busiest pedestrian intersections in the city with up to 10,000 pedestrians passing through every hour.
“This compares with just 73 cars an hour using this section during the AM peak.
“It’s smart planning to respond to changes in the way people move around the city; with more people on foot and few cars, it makes sense to turn the grey into green and create a more functional space.”
Deckchairs and open air table tennis equipment - including bats and balls - will be available for park-goers to use during the day from Thursdays to Sundays.
Lord Mayor Doyle said the pop up park is a great opportunity to explore how people use this new space before the City of Melbourne closes a section of the road permanently and creates a $2.2 million public space in 2019.
The Lord Mayor said City of Melbourne contractors will clean the area several times daily, while Victoria Police will conduct regular monitoring and patrols.
Lord Mayor Doyle stated “this is a welcome addition to the city’s open space and it’s good news for nearby businesses. The new park can even be used for small scale events.”
The pop-up-park will be in place over the summer period until February next year.
