read moreA new summer ‘pop-up’ park will be built in the heart of Melbourne to regenerate up a corner being dubbed the city's "ugly duckling".
The space on Elizabeth Street, between Flinders Lane and Flinders Street, will feature trees, planter boxes, artificial turf and movable furniture.
It will be open between December and February.
Lord Mayor Robert Doyle told ABC Radio Melbourne the Council would eventually build a permanent park there in 2019 when a new $40 million office complex is built at the site.
The revamp will also tie in with the $11 billion Metro Tunnel works in the area, which will eventually see the Elizabeth Street trams continue around the corner towards Federation Square.
A new train station will also be built opposite Flinders Street station.
Lord Mayor Doyle said the park and offices would replace the "ratty" convenience and late-night stores currently on the corner.
He told the ABC “we've always wanted to beautify that bit of an ugly duckling of a corner.
"It's been a bit of a congregating spot, and a bit of a hotspot for us over the years."
Lord Mayor Doyle said the three-month pop-up park would give the Council an opportunity for a test run before construction began.
He added “before construction starts, let's look at how the public realm might be given over to pedestrians and people lingering there, rather than rushing through.
"When construction starts we'll remove it (the pop-up park) again but we'll get a good idea how it should work with the completed building."
