read moreThe City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder has been acknowledged for its 10 years of being a Waterwise Council at the annual Water Corporation’s Waterwise Recognition evening last week.
Installation of water-saving fittings on taps and showerheads at City facilities along with the use of treated effluent water to irrigate parks, reserves, gardens, and the Kalgoorlie Golf Course are among the water-saving initiatives undertaken by Council.
Officially awarded Waterwise Council status on 28th July 2014, the City, over the last decade, has demonstrated ongoing leadership in sustainable water management.
A joint initiative by Water Corporation and Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, the program supports and recognises local governments who lead by example in responsible water consumption and continuously work to inspire residents to save water.
Other water-saving initiatives undertaken by Council include:
Mayor Glenn Wilson said that he is extremely proud of the City reaching this milestone and is committed to maintaining a focus on sustainable water practices.
Mayor Wilson noted “Water is a precious resource here in the Goldfields. It travels hundreds of kilometres along the pipeline to reach us, and receiving this recognition is a testament to the City’s ongoing efforts in the preservation of this essential resource.
“The City is committed to maintaining our Waterwise status through the development of new initiatives, improving existing practices at City facilities, and making the best use of various water sources.
"Being waterwise is not just about water sustainability, it also includes efforts to create a cooler environment. As an inland regional city, we take great pride in our green spaces and will continue to invest in street tree planting and the maintenance of our much-loved parks and reserves.”
In addition to accepting a certificate at the event, the City will be gifted a new park bench and plaque to commemorate the milestone to be installed in a public location within the city.
