Centennial Parklands acclaimed for strategic initiatives and commitment to the community

Centennial Parklands acclaimed for strategic initiatives and commitment to the community
May 18, 2018

Centennial Parklands’ innovation has been recognised with its receipt of two awards at the Parks and Leisure Australia’s 2018 NSW and ACT Regional Awards of Excellence, held in Tamworth last Thursday (10th May 2018).

The Parklands received first place for best Strategic Planning Award for Moore Park Master Plan 2040 and best Playspace Award (greater than $500,000) for Centennial Park’s new Ian Potter Children’s WILD PLAY Garden, which has received over 150,000 visits since opening in October 2017, and the Strategic Planning Award for its Moore Park 2040 masterplan.

Welcoming the Award, Kim Ellis, Botanic Gardens and Centennial Parklands Executive Director, stated “we are thrilled and honoured to receive these awards. They are an accumulation of many years of hard work for the Parklands team, who are continuously working to protect, enhance and improve our Parklands.

“To see both these projects come to fruition and be embraced by the community, supports our vision to create a world-class and sustainable Parklands, and make it one of the most aesthetically beautiful, historical and culturally-significant public spaces in Australia.”

Playspace Award - The Ian Potter Children's WILD PLAY Garden
The Ian Potter Children's WILD PLAY Garden was awarded Best Playspace Award for its unique approach to child learning and engagement.

The unique Garden is a state-of-the-art nature play space designed to engage the five senses, and helps to reconnect children to nature. It is one of few gardens in the country that offer engaging ‘nature-based’ play, and the first in New South Wales.

During its conception key community groups and educators were consulted to ensure that this space would both challenge and educate children through natural play experiences. This type of education has been shown to positively benefit children’s future physical and mental development.

Strategic Planning Award - Moore Park 2040
The Moore Park Master Plan 2040 has been awarded the Strategic Planning Award for delivering a robust planning framework and guiding principles for the future direction and management of Moore Park. The development of the plan involved two years of public engagement and consultation. This result was the delivery of a highly visible, transparent and collaborative plan meeting the needs of all stakeholders.

Centennial Parklands will now go on to the National Awards, which will be announced at the International Parks Congress Awards of Excellence Gala Dinner on 16th October at the MCG.

PLA’s awards acknowledge excellence in the parks and recreation planning sectors and the great effort of the ‘people behind the park’ who have worked to develop and improve the popular community green space.
