read moreBali Zoo has introduced a new intimate Elephant Mud Fun half-day package allowing guests to interact with friendly Sumatran elephants while discovering their behavior and lifestyle from the experienced mahout.
Guests learn interesting facts such as it is common to find elephants basking in mud during summer months because their high body temperature generates a great deal of metabolic heat. With no sweat glands to relieve their internal thermometers, they rely on mud to stay cool and protect themselves from the heat because even though they look tough, elephants can actually get sunburned.
Lesmana Putra, General Manager of Bali Zoo, explained "the Zoo's English-speaking mahout shares information about the gentle giants and also provides guests with a selection of tropical fruits for feeding. Guests are escorted by the mahout to the river bank to be introduced to free roaming elephants and have a chance to play, feed, interact and take photos with them.
"Then, it's shirts off and bathers on for elephant spa time! With a generous mix of earth, water and fun. Guests walk with the elephants down to the nearby River Wos to join them for a splash, bath and scrub down."
Visitors are invited to explore the rest of the zoo seeing the Zoo's collection of over 500 rare and exotic animals including rare and endangered species such as the Komodo dragon, Sumatran Tiger, Orangutan and Bali Starling. Admission also extends guests to participate in various 'hands-on' animal encounter sessions where animal enthusiasts are allowed to feed, pet and take photos with a number of Zoo inhabitants.
Bali Zoo's Elephant Mud Fun experience is designed to enlighten the behavior of these magnificent mammals and also leave guests feeling fulfilled having participated in one of the most unique outdoor adventures in Bali.
