read moreThe City of Subiaco has announced that the business case for the Subi East redevelopment has been approved by the Western Australian Government with $227 million budgeted to transform the Subiaco Oval and former Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) sites.
This funding will go towards preparing the Subi East site for an expected $1 billion worth of private investment over the life of the project that will see more than 2000 new dwellings developed around Subiaco Oval and the PMH precinct, bringing 3500 new residents to Subiaco.
The City of Subiaco will now work with the Western Australian Government on the masterplan which will focus on the urban design of the site including cultural and heritage elements, landscape design and the public realm.
Advising that the council will now work with the Western Australian Government to ensure the redevelopment brought vibrancy to Subiaco, Mayor Penny Taylor commented last week that "we’re working to capitalise on opportunities and ensure the redevelopment fits in with Subiaco’s existing character.
“The project will create over 3.4 hectares of public open space including unlocking Subiaco Oval for community use.
“During master planning, the City will be advocating for our community’s priorities which include optimising public open space, high-quality design and heritage interpretation."
Most of the Subiaco Oval demolition works will be completed in time for the opening of Bob Hawke College in February 2020. The oval playing surface will then be reinstated to its original dimensions for access by the community for the first time in decades.
Demolition of the former PMH site is expected to commence by the end of 2021, dependent on project requirements and further site investigations.
