read moreThe Western Australian Government has announced plans to redevelop Perth's Subiaco Oval precinct as a community sportsground, high school and mixed-use development after the new Perth Stadium opens next year.
The plan would see much of the current stadium demolished with its playing surface to be kept intact for school and community use, and its heritage gates retained.
Remaining parts of Subiaco Oval's stands would be used for offices, potentially for the West Australian Football Commission (WAFC).
The new school, which would be located on the adjacent Kitchener Park, would aim to alleviate overcrowding in high schools in Perth's western suburbs high schools and would welcome its first students in 2020.
With the first stage of the project to cost $68 million, the Western Australian Government is set to consult a range of stakeholders on the proposal. And while the Western Australian Government owns the land Subiaco Oval sits on, it is vested in the City of Subiaco which is understood to favour keeping Kitchener Park as open space.
Subiaco Mayor Heather Henderson told the ABC "our preferred position is to retain Kitchener Park and the green space of Subiaco Oval for community use, and the council will have to deliberate now that this proposal is before us.”
WAFC also holds a 70-plus year lease on the venue and is currently negotiaiting funding for grassroots AFL as part of relinquishing its hosting of AFL games in Perth.
