YMCAs of Geelong, Whittlesea and Victoria combine to deliver community programs in new schools

YMCAs of Geelong, Whittlesea and Victoria combine to deliver community programs in new schools
September 11, 2015

The YMCAs of Geelong, Whittlesea and Victoria have been confirmed as part of a consortium that will build and operate 13 new community hubs, 12 single court sport arenas, a learn-to-swim pool and six child care centres at new schools in growth corridors of Geelong and Melbourne.

Learning Communities Victoria, was recently announced as the successful bidder for the New Victorian Schools public private partnership project.

Learning Communities Victoria brings together expertise from ClarkeHopkinsClarke as architect, Watpac as builder, Spotless as facilities manager and YMCA and CERES as community partners.

With the Victorian Government opening 15 new schools in growth areas of Melbourne and Geelong in 2017 and 2018, each design will feature additional community facilities and programs with the aim of transforming each of the schools into community hubs.

This represents a significant new venture for the YMCAs of Geelong, Whittlesea and Victoria, and a new phase of the YMCA delivering community programs and facilities in the growth areas of Melbourne and Geelong.

Commenting on the YMCA’s involvement, YMCA Australia Chief Executive Ron Mell stated “what a great example of YMCA’s working together to expand our impact on the health and happiness of families in these emerging communities.”

Final negotiations between the Victorian Government and Learning Communities Victoria are now underway with contracts expected to be signed in late October, with construction of the first group of schools scheduled to begin by the end of this year.

CERES is an environmental education charity that will run environmental programs at each school.
