read moreArthritis and Osteoporosis Victoria (A&OV) along with YMCA Victoria have commenced a new era of the ‘Waves’ warm water exercise program.
Since late April, several YMCA venues across metropolitan Melbourne have been running the program which, provides warm water-based exercise classes and assists many in their quest to lead healthy and active lifestyles.
Commenting on the program, Arthritis and Osteoporosis Victoria Chief Executive Linda Martin stated “this new partnership will ensure people with muscle, bone and joint conditions can receive a consistent and quality service delivered in excellent facilities.”
YMCA Victoria Development Manager Andrew Hamer adds “we are delighted to be working together with Arthritis and Osteoporosis Victoria to address the critical issue of preventative health in our communities.”
Warm water exercise is one of the most accessible forms of exercise for people living with arthritis and other muscle, bone and joint conditions as the water provides support for the body making it more comfortable and enjoyable.
Run for more than 30 years, in 2014, A&OV conducted a research project with Monash University (Best practice evidence for warm water exercise for people with musculoskeletal conditions: A systematic review of the literature 2014) that revealed warm water exercise provides similar outcomes to land-based exercise but is an effective and safe alternative for those who are unable to exercise on land due to their condition. It also revealed that people who participate in warm water exercise experienced a moderate reduction in pain, and a moderate improvement in physical function and quality of life.
The aim of the partnership is to expand the new and improved model of the ‘Waves’ program broadly into the community, including regional Victoria, to ensure reach and that services are available and accessible to the 1.5 million Victorians living with painful muscle, bone and joint conditions.
Waves Program will be offered during the initial phase at the following YMCA Centres:
• Ascot Vale Leisure Centre
• Ashburton Pool and Recreation Centre
• Brunswick Baths
• Casey RACE
• Dandenong Oasis
• Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre
• Knox Leisureworks
