read moreConstruction currently underway in the Brisbane suburb of Parkinson will see a new aquatic and recreation centre open to the residents of the city’s southern suburbs at the end of this year.
Facility managers City Venue Management are constructing the facility as a design-build-operate project that will see them undertaken the long-term operation of the Parkinson Aquatic Centre once it opens.
Set to be the city’s second largest aquatic facility after the Sleeman Sports Complex, the new facility will include a heated 50 metre-eight lane outdoor pool with accessible ramp, an 18 metre heated indoor leisure pool with accessible ramp, kiosk, café, car park, accessible change rooms that are suitable for people with a disability, as well as car parking, staff rooms, storage areas, a plant room and a service area.
The centre will also include space for multi-purpose indoor sport facilities to accommodate small group fitness classes.
Speaking about the project earlier this year, Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said the multi-purpose recreational facility was the next step in Council’s journey to provide world class facilities across Brisbane’s suburbs.
Lord Mayor Quirk stated “Council is committed to ensuring our suburbs have the facilities they need to provide vibrant and engaging surroundings for residents and visitors, and that’s why we are delivering two brand new facilities.
“Council is investing $18 million to construct new facilities or upgrade existing Council pools this financial year, with works including improvements to amenities, access ramps, paths, car parks and pool facilities, as well as a range of accessibility upgrades.
“Since 2006 there has been a 70% increase in visitors to Council’s pools with more than two million visitors each year as a result of Council’s continued investment.”
The Council has allocated over $7.8 million towards the project with further investment coming from appointed operator, City Venue Management.
City Venue Management currently operate the Centenary Pool in Spring Hill, Colmslie Pool, Runcorn Pool and Chermside Pool for the City of Brisbane.
