Walking Basketball is being delivered in Maryborough via a partnership between the Maryborough Basketball Association, Basketball Victoria, Healthy Loddon Campaspe, Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre and Council.

Walking Basketball – which as the name suggests is a walking basketball - is a low impact, social and fun way to improve the levels of physical activity for those who want a slower pace or are coming back from injury.

Walking Basketball is for participants aged 55+ across genders and abilities and helps to maintain and improve health and decrease risk factors associated with sedentary behaviour.

Walking Basketball will be held on 10th June, 17th June, 24th June and Tuesday 1st July at 10am at the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre and will then re-commence in term three.

Bookings are not necessary and there is no cost to participate.

Central Goldfields Shire Mayor Grace La Vella said it was fantastic to see walking basketball introduced in the Central Goldfields enthused “Getting active, more often is what the Healthy Loddon Campaspe is all about and introducing new ways to do this is a great thing.

“What makes Walking Basketball stand out from most activities is that it doesn’t matter if you have never played the game of basketball before.

“Walking Basketball offers a level playing field for everyone within a social, fun and non-competitive environment.”

Basketball Victoria representative Kathy Perry enthused “It is a fantastic way to stay active, meet new people and enjoy the many social and health benefits of being part of a team.

“It is a welcoming, inclusive program designed to keep people moving, connected and having fun -no matter their age. We are looking forward to seeing you on court!”

Maryborough Basketball Association President Grant Allan said they were proud to be helping facilitate the launch of Walking Basketball in the Central Goldfields Shire and added “It is a fantastic initiative that supports those aged 55+ of all abilities to move their bodies more often.

“We look forward to seeing strong community participation and connection through this inclusive program.”
