Toowoomba enjoys record-breaking visitor numbers

Toowoomba enjoys record-breaking visitor numbers
July 21, 2017

Toowoomba's Cobb and Co Museum has record-breaking crowds  in the past financial year, attracting more than 100,000 visitors.

Events including a celebration of a beloved children's television program, unique heritage trade workshops, artisan markets and fun school holiday programs contributed to the museum attracting more than 100,000 visitors in the past financial year, beating last year's record of 88,762.

Queensland Premier and Minister for the Arts Annastacia Palaszczuk congratulated the museum for its succcess, stating "these record crowds clearly demonstrate that the Cobb and Co Museum is successfully engaging with the local community through a vibrant events program.

"It's been a huge year in Toowoomba with the exhibitions A Room for Wild Animals and Happy Birthday Play School: Celebrating 50 Years, fun holiday and school programs, artisan markets and a huge range of heritage trade workshops just some of the fun activities on offer.

"I congratulate the Cobb and Co Museum for its record-breaking achievement and its work in preserving and telling our unique Australian stories, supporting cultural tourism opportunities and offering so many engaging activities for local community members to enjoy.

"Through its dynamic public program this beloved cultural institution is delivering on my Government's Advance Queensland initiative which aims to foster innovation across our state."

Queensland Museum Network Chief Executive and Director Professor Suzanne Miller said she was incredibly proud of the museum's achievements, commenting "our tremendous success is testament to the hard work and passion of the Cobb and Co staff and the public's ongoing support and enthusiasm for traditional and forgotten trades."

Professor Miller said Toowoomba residents could expect a continuation of the exciting and educational programming into the future, adding "we have aspirations for greater success next year, and with ongoing support from public and partners I am confident we will achieve our goals."

The Cobb and Co Museum opened in 1987 as a home for Queensland Museum’s catalogue of horse-drawn vehicles.

In 2001, a second stage was built onto the existing museum to create a space to display the history of Toowoomba and the Darling Downs.
