read moreTwo National Sport Organisations with enviable track records in providing inclusive opportunities in sport have confirmed their commitment to ensuring inclusion is an organisational priority by becoming members of the National Sport Inclusion Alliance (NSIA).
Table Tennis Australia and Tenpin Bowling Australia are the first organisations to sign up to the NSIA, with both organisations having demonstrated an early interest in the initiative by attending a number of key forums and meetings since its launch in November of last year.
Table Tennis Australia has highlighted as a goal for inclusion to “identify clubs and/or clusters of clubs who have both good and poor access opportunities for inclusion and increase their capacity and capability.”
As a member of the NSIA, Table Tennis Australia Chief Executive Peter Marriott explains “Table Tennis Australia is committed to improving its inclusive practices and looks forward to working with the NSIA over the next three years to achieve our goals.”
Tenpin Bowling Australia has committed to “ensuring all policies that are implemented are inclusive and take into consideration the impact of the policy on people with a disability. Specific policies that encourage equitable involvement and opportunity to participate in the sport of tenpin bowling will be developed. Current policies and procedures will undergo an audit process to ensure equity across all members.”
Tenpin Bowling Australia Chief Executive Cara Honeychurch added “providing greater opportunities for people with a disability to be involved from grass roots through to elite level competition is something Tenpin Bowling Australia is very passionate about.
“For several years we have conducted National Disability Championships but have also provided opportunities for people with a disability to compete in our mainstream National Championships. We believe in providing choice to participants and are committed to making our sport welcoming and inclusive for everyone. Tenpin Bowling Australia is excited to be part of the NSIA and look forward to working with other organisations to improve the lives of people with disability.”
The NSIA is currently preparing to welcome further organisations into the national network, with a number of National Sport Organisations currently not far off from gaining membership.
NSIA was established by the Australian Sport and Recreation Association for Persons with Integration Difficulties (AUSRAPID) to provide a coordinated and cohesive platform to enable NSIA member organisations to increase capacity for inclusion in sport of people who have an intellectual disability.
