Scarborough foreshore redevelopment gets official unveiling

Scarborough foreshore redevelopment gets official unveiling
March 20, 2018

The $100 million redevelopment of the Scarborough beach foreshore - featuring the new Scarborough Beach pool, skate facilities, a new playground and play space for families - has been officially opened.

Opening the redeveloped area, Western Australian Premier Mark McGowan said the redevelopment would encourage more families to visit Scarborough and turn it into one of Australia's top tourism destinations.

Premier McGowan stated “one of the things that's terrific about Western Australia is our beach culture because it helps us stay healthy, fit and active but also attracts tourists from interstate and elsewhere.

"The redevelopment of Scarborough beach will ensure that we have another attraction to attract tourists from interstate and overseas.

"Scarborough Beach has always been popular with Western Australians and tourists, and this transformation is sure to rival other beaches around Australia as one of the country's top tourism destinations.”

While sections of the development have been opened slowly over recent months, but Sunday's unveiling was the first time the public was able to enjoy almost everything that the project has to offer.

At the heart of the redevelopment and in acknowledgement of Scarborough's cultural heritage, the ‘Snake Pit’ has returned and includes a 3.6-metre, competition-grade skate bowl for local use, events and global competitions.

The Scarborough Beach development will be completely finished in April with the upgrade of its local surf club.

While the foreshore has been completed in time for the Australian Surf Life Saving championships next month, final construction and fit-out of the new $5 million Scarborough Surf Life Saving Club facility will have to wait until the competition is wrapped up.

Two new commercial precincts also await completion.
