Plans move forward for ocean front pool at Scarborough Beach

Plans move forward for ocean front pool at Scarborough Beach
February 27, 2016

The City of Stirling’s plans to build a ‘lido’ style ocean front swimming pool at Perth’s Scarborough Beach are moving forward, with the Council anticipating up to $13 million in Government funding to towards the $26 million project.

Anticipating that the project “will meet the health and recreational needs of our residents within the coastal and western suburbs, as well as the broader population that are attracted to Perth's premier  beachfront  destination”, the Council expects that the project will become the “jewel in the crown” of the popular beach.

Christou Architecture’s most recent design for the facility includes an eight to 12-lane 50 metre pool (that can be divided to two 25 metre areas), a separate leisure pool for learn-to-swim and a 600 metre² mezzanine level for food and beverage outlets.

The pool will also feature spectator seating, change rooms and supporting amenities, extensive shade, relaxation areas, and passive family areas.

The innovative design of the 50 metre pool will be 3 metres to accommodate water polo and pool inflatables  while also featuring an additional four lanes for half of its length to support these activities as well as senior and junior swim squads. The separate leisure pool will also be heated at 32 degrees to ensure a comfortable temperature of learn-to-swim all year round.

The City of Stirling applied for a $10 million grant from the Federal Government and $3 million from the Western Australian Department of Sport and Recreation last year, with outcomes expected to be known in the next month.

Stirling Mayor Giovanni Italiano said the Council had worked in consultation with stakeholders, including Swimming WA, Masters Swimming WA, Swimming Australia, Water Polo WA and the Western Australian Department of Education to ensure the pool was widely used by tourists as well as locals.

He explained “the beach pool will draw on Scarborough’s unique identity and create a vibrant hub of activity where people of all ages will be able exercise, recreate and grab a relaxing bite to eat all while enjoying the amazing view of Scarborough Beach

“The City and the MRA is working very hard to make Scarborough an active family friendly hub for locals and tourists alike and the new beach pool will be the ‘jewel in the crown’ for the precinct.”

If plans go ahead, construction is expected to commence in the middle of the year and be complete by late 2017.
