read moreRugby Australia has revealed that registrations for its Get into Rugby program – an entry-level format for children aged four to seven which launched in March, have surpassed 6,000 and continue to grow. The initial numbers have instilled confidence in Rugby Australia that the initiative will boost future junior playing numbers.
The Get into Rugby program was launched ahead of the 2025 season. For many children, the program serves as their introduction to the game and provides them with the skills for a safe, confident transition to contact rugby.
The new and improved offering included two age-based streams, four to five, and six to seven, to maximise engagement and development.
Data from the opening months of the season shows 6,140 participants have already signed up across the country and Sydney Junior Rugby Union, who trialled the program in 2024, has reported a nearly 20% year-to-date increase in registrations.
Rugby Australia Director of Community Rugby, Michael Procajlo advised "we are extremely pleased with the response to Get into Rugby and congratulate the Clubs and Associations across the country who have embraced the new format.
"Based on the feedback and growth from ACT Juniors and Sydney Juniors, both in their second year, we are confident this initiative will boost junior playing numbers in the years ahead."
Rugby Australia also unveiled Play Rugby this month, which serves as the new umbrella brand for all rugby participation in Australia.
It aims to bring everything from Get into Rugby and Tri Tag Rugby to Rugby 7s and XVs under one clear, simple identity.
The goal is to make it easier for people to see how they can get involved as a player, coach or match official, no matter their age, experience, or location.
Play Rugby will also provide an avenue to share great stories from across the country on all things Community Rugby.
