Rockhampton Regional Council has revealed that the number of people visiting the Rockhampton Zoo has almost trebled.

As reported in an operational update, presented to the Council’s Parks, Recreation and Sport Committee last week, nearly 19,000 people passed through the Zoo’s gates in March of this year, compared to 6,500 in the same month of 2017.

Parks Committee Chair, Councillor Cherie Rutherford, said it was wonderful to see, advising "these numbers provide the evidence for what we have all seen and experienced – the Zoo’s popularity is soaring.

“This of course is largely due to the birth of our lovely baby chimp Capri, with people coming from far and wide to see her with her parents, Leakey and Alon.

“It is also due to the staff and volunteers, who work hard every day to ensure the Zoo is an exciting and welcoming place to explore.

“We saw the biggest jump in March, but our numbers are up for every month of this calendar year so far, almost doubling overall."

The free-to-enter Zoo is open daily from 8am until 4.30pm.
