Report highlights value of Western Australian racing
September 18, 2012

The economic and social value of the Western Australian racing industry has been highlighted with the release of a report that shows a contribution of $594.6million in value added to the State's economy by racing.

Western Australian Racing and Gaming Minister Terry Waldron said the report, conducted by leading independent consulting and research firm IER, highlighted the significant expenditure WA racing had on 'down-the-line industries', particularly the farming, transport, tourism, retail and hospitality industries.

Minister Waldron explained "racing is the third-highest attended sporting event in WA behind AFL football and motor racing, which underlines how important the industry is as a source of entertainment to West Australians and visitors to our State

"The industry contributes more than $550 million in direct expenditure, with more than 48% of this expenditure occurring in regional areas.

"Racing has been an integral part of the WA psyche for generations, with more than 33,000 people employed or participating in the production of racing animals. This translates to 6,700 full-time equivalent jobs.

"It's a sport that engages all West Australians - from the glamour of Ascot to the hundreds of regional races held across the State."

Western Australia has 55 racing clubs and holds more than 870 thoroughbred, harness and greyhound race meetings throughout the year.

Minister Waldron said more than 750 volunteers supported WA's race clubs, and more than 114 community and charity organisations were financially assisted by race clubs through fundraising events and the utilisation of racing club facilities and resources.

He concluded "with so many race clubs holding events each weekend across the State, it's easy to see how important the industry is as an economic driver in terms of employment and entertainment."
