Launching the report today, the Reverend Tim Costello explained “(I am) honoured to be able to launch this evaluation which proves yet again the invaluable and quality work and community building that is undertaken by Reclink Australia.”
Presenting the results of their evaluation in conjunction with the Reclink Australia Victorian Grand Final Series at Peanut Farm Reserve in St Kilda, Professor Matthew Nicholson from Latrobe University advised that the evaluation was designed to assess the impact of the Reclink Australia national program on the lives of participants, and assess the relationships formed by Reclink Australia in order to mobilise the unique model that enables the delivery of the programs.
Professor Nicholson noted “the research has demonstrated, once again, that Reclink’s unique model is effective in reaching some of the most disadvantaged members of our community, and that the majority of those who have been reached have had their lives improved by participating in a Reclink program. In its first 12 months, the Reclink National Program engaged over 3,200 people experiencing disadvantage and delivered over 45,500 sport and recreation participation opportunities.”
The evaluation found some remarkable results, with participants reporting an 80% reduction in their drug or alcohol use, 79% reduction in problem gambling and 78% spent less time in a correctional centre.
In addition, 27% had been able to gain employment or increase the number of hours they work and 37% had started or undertaken more skill or work-based training.
Reclink Australia Chief Executive, John Ballis added “the results of the evaluation are nothing short of outstanding and truly solidifies the positive impact of sport and recreation in our lives.”
The National Program Evaluation launch is taking place in conjunction with the Reclink Australia Victorian Grand Final Series that gives each Reclink team the opportunity to play regardless of their results over the season.
Reclink’s national program currently operates in 25 targeted communities around Australia and reaches thousands of community members experiencing multiple forms of serious disadvantage including unemployment, drug and alcohol addiction, domestic and community violence, recidivism, mental and physical health issues, problem gambling, social isolation, and socio-economic disadvantage.
The following key guests are attending the Grand Final series across the three days: Father Bob, Tim Costello, Bruce Davis, Joe Jacobi, Pat Guest, Joffa, Bob Maguire, Brian Nankervis, Paul Craig, Matthew Lloyd, Terry Daniher, David Rhys Jones and Michael Barlow.
