read moreMelbourne’s La Trobe University has opened the first stage of its $150 million Sports Park development – a new artificial turf football field.
The new FIFA accredited pitch will be used by the University’s football teams, the community and Melbourne City Football Club junior and development teams for both competition games and research.
Working with the Warren and Mahoney design team, consultants SPORTENG designed the synthetic grass playing surface to match the diagonal fall of the existing terrain. The playing surface will drain through the synthetic grass system (including shockpad) and into the underlying drainage cell. The cell then conveys the stormwater runoff towards perimeter trench grates. To create a seamless playing surface appearance, the trench grates are covered by the synthetic grass system and drainage cell.
La Trobe Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar said the opening marked a significant step in the university’s sports park development, commenting “as a football fan myself, I’m looking forward to seeing some of the many great sporting events set to take place here.”
The next section of stage-one works includes a new natural grass oval and a new pavilion with female-friendly change rooms which will be ready for the upcoming cricket season.
Stage two of the 60 hectare development will include six indoor high ball courts and world-class science and analytics laboratories.
The Sports Park is part of La Trobe’s plan to partner the community with industry and research groups.
La Trobe Sport Director Professor Russell Hoye said the goal was to become the preferred university for tertiary sport study and research, as well as industry collaboration.
