read moreRAC has revealed plans for a $70 million redevelopment of the Ningaloo Reef Resort and supporting facilities, showcasing a significant transformation of the popular tourism destination.
The proposed redevelopment would involve the demolition of the current resort, to make way for 90 new holiday units, along with a new pool and sunlounge area, restaurant, bar and alfresco dining, and function spaces.
Advising thatt the redevelopment would be one of the most significant tourism projects ever undertaken in regional Western Australia, RAC Group Chief Executive, Rob Slocombe stated "with only a minor expansion to the overall property footprint, the capacity of the resort will increase from 160 to 270 people – meaning more options for West Australians to experience this iconic part of the world.
“We will introduce a great mix of new accommodation, from hotel rooms to one, two and three bedroom units.”
“The new resort will offer unrivalled, panoramic views of the Indian Ocean, with the World Heritage Ningaloo Reef and its magnificent marine life within paddling distance.”
The new design recognises the unique landscape of the Ningaloo region and reflects the character of the area through design choices such as walls made of local stone, natural timber accents, and colourful native wildflowers in the extensive gardens.
Explaining this, Slocombe noted "we want to enhance what makes Coral Bay such a special place
“The minimalistic design of our buildings allows the breathtaking beauty of the natural surroundings to truly shine and be celebrated.”
Sustainability is also a key focus, with the proposed resort including a considerable investment in solar, adopting induction appliances and heat pump hot water systems to eliminate the need for gas, and offering electric vehicle chargers for guests and visitors.
A development application has been submitted to the Shire of Carnarvon, with a public notice period to begin shortly.
Slocombe added "we would like to thank the many stakeholders and community groups in Coral Bay for the significant input they have already provided and we look forward to continuing to engage with the local community."
Subject to approvals, works are planned to begin in early 2024 and are expected to take around 24 months to complete.
