Queenslanders meet to shape Commonwealth Games legacy

Queenslanders meet to shape Commonwealth Games legacy
July 28, 2013

Queenslanders are having their say on the legacies they would like the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018) to provide.

At recent Gold Coast and Brisbane community meetings a range of ideas were put forward to use the Games to create positive and enduring impacts for Queenslanders.

Queensland Minister for the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey explained that the most recent meetings mark a transition to the next consultation stage which will include focus groups, online polling and regular stakeholder meetings.

Minister Stuckey explained "representatives from all walks of life attended the community meetings to discuss legacy initiatives around our lifestyle, community and economy.

"The Queensland Government held the community meetings in collaboration with City of Gold Coast, consulting with more than 120 people.

"The passion shown by these participants to make the most of the Games augurs well as we continue to develop a legacy plan for the whole State.

"We will now explore the ideas generated from these meetings and an online survey by using targeted focus groups and engaging further with partners in the community.

"Our engagement process will enable us to deliver a valuable legacy for Queensland."

Some of the initiatives discussed during the community meetings included:

• Creating cohesive education programs to encourage healthy and active lifestyles;
• Building legacy events and programs around existing community programs to ensure longevity;
• Building cost effective and sustainable venues;
• Creating multi-cultural cohesiveness through legacy initiatives;
• Engaging youth in programs; and
• Attracting volunteers.

Participant Savvy Hunt, a disability advisor from Southport, said the meetings broadened his perspective on legacy issues, stating "legacy and the Commonwealth Games have always been close to my heart. I came away from the meeting with even more drive and passion to help make it the best it can possibly be."

Fellow participant Earle Johnston of The Salvation Army in Brisbane was pleased to have the opportunity to participate and help shape the Games legacy.

Johnston stated "it's through collaborative opportunities like these that issues can be highlighted for discussion and we can focus on ensuring our legacy is all about building strong communities and helping others."

The legacy plan for Queensland will be released in late 2013.
