read moreA preliminary site concept plan has been released for a new visitor gateway to Tasmania’s Freycinet National Park with the plan having been developed with extensive input from specialist consultants and informed by site surveys and investigations undertaken over a number of years.
The Visitor Gateway project is a key initiative of the Freycinet Peninsula Master Plan, to alleviate traffic congestion and parking issues within the park, particularly during the peak season, while maintaining protection of its unique natural and cultural values.
Tasmanian Minister for Parks Nick Duigan noted “The Freycinet Visitor Gateway is an important component of our plan to deliver infrastructure and strategies to accommodate current and projected visitation.
“Care has been taken to locate the infrastructure to avoid or minimise impacts to natural, cultural and social values of the site.
“The Visitor Gateway concept plans include a carpark with electric vehicle charging facilities, visitor services building, amenities, wayfinding and interpretations, and a bus shelter and turning circle to support a shuttle bus system moving people in and out of the national park.
“A key part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is to sustain a high-quality visitor experience at one of Tasmania’s most iconic destinations, which this Plan does.”
The Freycinet Visitor Gateway project is supported through a $14 million election commitment by the State Government and $5.7 million from the Australian Government.
Members of the public are invited to attend the information sessions, view the preliminary concept plan and talk with Tasmania Parks and Wildlife staff involved with the project.
The information sessions will be held at the Coles Bay Community Hall, 60 Harold Street, Coles Bay on the following dates:
Date: Friday 30th May 2025
Time: 12pm – 2pm and 4pm – 7pm
Date: Saturday 31st May 2025
Time: 9am – 12pm
The Visitor Gateway concept design will be further developed incorporating feedback received from the public, with more detailed plans to be released for public consultation as part of the Reserve Activity Assessment process
