NZRA highlights achievements in aquatics

NZRA highlights achievements in aquatics
July 9, 2018

In the lead up to its Waves Conference next month, the New Zealand Recreation Association (NZRA) has released a document highlighting its achievements in aquatic facility management and safety initiatives.

The Aquatics Case Study explains how the NZRA has helped shape aquatics in New Zealand through its PoolSafe Quality Management Scheme (PoolSafe), industry awards and campaigns to remind caregivers of their responsibilities when at aquatic facilities.

The PoolSafe is an independent assessment of public pools to ensure that their operations and facilities are safe.

Jointly developed in 2001 by the New Zealand Recreation Association (NZRA) and Water Safety New Zealand (WSNZ) Poolsafe is an industry led, voluntary management system designed by the industry for the industry. It enables peer to peer assessment and moderates the delivery of public aquatic facilities services, with the direct intent to limit serious harm to their communities.

With 214 public pools in New Zealand, currently 147 are members of the PoolSafe scheme.

Lauinched in January, the 2018 Poolsafe campaign set out to remind parents and guardians that the majority of accidents and drowning incidents in public, as well as backyard, swimming pools can

be attributed to inadequate supervision, with mobile phones a particular distraction.

At the time, NZRA Aquatics Project Manager Tracey Prince explained “even if there are plenty of lifeguards at a pool, putting down your cellphone and making sure there are no distractions can mean the difference between life and death.

"As a caregiver you should support the lifeguard by giving the kids your full attention."

2018 has also seen the NZRA combine its annual JAWS (Just Add Water Seminar) with the AUSTSWIM Aotearoa Conference and the New Zealand Lifeguard Championships.

The new event, the Waves Conference, is being held in Rotorua from 19th to 23rd August.
