One of Victoria’s largest water spray grounds/splash pads, along with a basketball court, playground, and barbeque and picnic facilities has been opened at the 1.4 hectare Village Park at Werribee’s new Riverwalk Estate.

The development, a project of Places Victoria in partnership with land owner Melbourne Water, is on the former site of the Werribee Treatment Plant, which relocated in the late 1990s.

Commenting on the new facilities, Victorian Planning Minister Matthew Guy stated “Places Victoria and Melbourne Water have unlocked this site’s potential and are busy creating a new neighbourhood here in Melbourne’s west.

“This estate demonstrates urban renewal in action, with Places Victoria creating a neighbourhood that takes advantage of the site’s location on the banks of the Werribee River and close proximity to the existing Werribee Town Centre. The Village Park shows a commitment to delivering community infrastructure early in the life of the Riverwalk estate and to building a community, not just a housing estate.”

Adding that the recreation facilities add to the attractions available in Melbourne’s west, Minister Guy concluded “the future East Werribee Employment Precinct nearby will also benefit from this park and the two schools and neighbourhood centre that are planned for the Riverwalk estate.

“The East Werribee Precinct Structure Plan delivers on a key initiative of the Victorian Coalition Government’s new planning blueprint, Plan Melbourne, and will generate more than 58,000 jobs and more than 7,000 homes as a model 21st century city.”

The 197 hectare Riverwalk Estate has a development value of $300 million and will be home to approximately 6,600 people upon completion in 2027.
