Sited within the Horseshoe Bridge near the Perth Arena and Perth train station and bus port, the development will form part of the link between Perth's CBD and the popular Northbridge entertainment district, made possible by the sinking of the city's rail lines.
It is named after Western Australia Aboriginal leader Yagan, who played a role in early resistance to British colonisation and will draw its design inspiration from Indigenous traditions and ancient lakes that once ran through the city.
The area will cater for events of up to 8,500 people and include an amphitheatre, fresh food market, native gardens, cycling centre, public art, digital tower to broadcast real-time events and a canopy that will showcase a light display at night.
Tourism Council of Western Australia (TCWA) Chief Executive Evan Hall has welcomed the designs, saying that the precinct will offer visitors a slice of the Perth lifestyle.
Hall explained "we really don't have a place where people can gather at night in Perth at the moment so I think Yagan Square, together with Elizabeth Quay is really going to enliven our outdoor experience, particularly at night,
“Tourists are hungry for food and wine experiences and the square will ... be brilliant for street level events and evening gatherings.
“The design and development of Yagan Square will add to Perth and WA as a destination."
