Melbourne to invest in events following lifting of COVID-19 restrictions
May 12, 2020

The City of Melbourne plans to invest $2.6 million in events to attract people back to the city once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.

Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp advises “our investment will ensure Melbourne is ready to welcome people back to the city once restrictions on large gatherings of people have been relaxed.

“We’ve seen a 79% drop in pedestrian numbers in the city compared to this time last year. Events and festivals are one way we can attract people back into the city and support our hospitality, retail and tourism sectors.

Chair of the City of Melbourne’s Prosperous City portfolio, Kevin Louey, said applications are now open for Council’s Event Partnership Program, for events planned to take place between 1st January and 31st December 2021.

Louey notes “we will invest $2.6 million to support approximately 60 events in the municipality including sporting, food and wine, health and wellbeing, sustainability, knowledge and innovation and creative events.

“Each year, events supported by this program attract 3.45 million people to the city and deliver an economic impact of $618 million.

“We don’t know how long these restrictions will last, but we’re doing everything we can to prepare for the future and support event organisers to help our economy bounce back once restrictions are lifted.

“The events industry needs to be in a position to thrive when people start coming back into the city.”

The Event Partnership Program provides cash and in-kind support for free events with widespread appeal that enhance the city's reputation.

The Event Partnership Program is now open for applications. An information webinar for potential applicants will be held on Tuesday 12th May, 1pm to 2pm.
