read moreLIWA Aquatics has shared details of its 24th Annual Regional Seminar held in Northam in Western Australia’s Avon Valley on 7th October.
One of the first in-person industry events held since the easing of Coronavirus restrictions, LIWA Aquatics Executive Officer, Steve Good commented “with COVID forcing our facilities to shut earlier in the year and not being unable to host the Annual State Conference in Fremantle, the aquatic industry was keen to return to some normality.
“With reduced restrictions in Western Australia and no community spread of COVID, LIWA members were enthusiastic to get out and about and travel to Northam.
“Some delegates even came from Esperance - a 1300 kilometre round trip - to support the seminar and engage with other members.
“Normally these regional seminars attracted 30 to 40 delegates but with the industry so keen to re-engage and wanting to network face to face record numbers saw the seminar sell out at 100 registrations which included 14 Trade Exhibitors which developed into a mini Trade Show.”
Good’s account of the Seminar continues:
Chris Blankley, the Vice President of LIWA Aquatics, was MC for the event which started with a Welcome to Country by Deborah Moody a local elder from the Northam Region. This was followed with the official opening and brief presentation about Northam by Shire President Chris Antonio.
The 0riginal Northam Pool was built in 1958 and consisted of an outdoor 50 metre pool which was popular at the time due to the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne. Most regional areas then requested for a 50 metre Olympic Style Swimming Pool for their community.
With the old pool now coming to its end of life being over 60 years old. A new pool was commissioned to be built and relocated and attach itself to the existing Recreation Centre and Sporting Precinct.
The delegates then set on a tour of the facility, splitting them up into three groups. Each group were taken on a guided tour of the Indoor Recreation Centre, Pool area and Plant Room.
The new Northam Pool was now equipped with an 8 lane 50m Pool with Disabled Access ramps, 25 metre Learn to Swim/Program Pool, Beach entry Toddler pool and Water Features and a four Flume Water Slide with a separate splash down pool.
The facility officially opened on Australia Day Weekend on 25th January 2020. But was forced to close earlier than expected in March 2020 due to the COVID Pandemic.
After the tour morning tea was then served on the Basketball courts where 14 Trade Exhibitors came to support the seminar and to re-engage with industry members in a mini Trade Show.
The first of the presentations for the day was Paul Astachiw from Ixom who provided delegates with an update on the new Australian Standard for Liquefied Chlorine Gas AS2927. It presented to industry the areas that facilities need to address to ensure compliance and provided an open forum for delegates to ask questions.
Fraser Read from the City of Canning then followed on with the theme of Liquefied Chlorine Gas by presenting on the Incident Cause Analysis Method (ICAM) which provided delegates an insight into an incident that happened at one of their facilities and how they followed the processes of ICAM allowing the facility to identify key findings of the incident, come to observations and conclusions and highlight the significant learnings and form a corrective action plan.
Lunch was then served again in the Trade Area to allow delegates further networking opportunities to speak with the Traders.
After Lunch Nick Wilkinson the President of LIWA Aquatics was proud to present more Industry Service Awards for 2020 which went to Fran Haenni 20 years and Geoff Heaton 30 years. Its is great to be able to recognise these individuals for their long service to our industry.
LIWA was pleased to have Adele Gismondi who heads up the Water Efficiency Team at Water Corporation who came across to Northam and present to members the latest recognition status of Gold and Platinum for the Water Wise program and to be able to present an award to the latest Water Wise Aquatic Centre Town of Esperance- Bay of Isle Leisure Centre.
CEO of Royal Life Saving Society WA Peter Leaversuch and Meg Abercromby who has been coordinating the latest research data reporting provided members with the newly formed Australian Water Safety Strategy by RLSSA, impacts of COVID-19 and updates of the annual state of the industry in WA - Bigger Better Safer Report 2020 which is set to be released shortly to industry.
Lauren Nimmo then provided delegates with an update of Watch Around Water and some of the new strategies and resources that will be available to those involved in the program.
“Wendy” the latest Watch Around Water Mascot paid the delegates a visit and was an instant hit with the young ones. Andy (the young pup) who is another addition to the Watch Around Water family, now form the family focus of Wendy, Andy and Walter the Watch Dog (WAW) and will lead the way for parental Supervision around our Aquatic Facilities and water environments.
The last presentations of the day came from Travis Doye and Leanne Coverley-Brandis from RLSSWA. Travis spoke to the delegates about Talent Pool and providing young local talents the opportunities of training, developing and the opportunity of landing their first job.
Leanne spoke about Traineeship opportunities and how facilities could take on young school-based trainees to lead into becoming a Pool Lifeguard or Pool Manager.
With the great support of our LIWA Board, Key Stakeholders & Partners, members, traders and the staff of Northam Rec Centre the day turn out to be a very successful event.
We look forward to our next event scheduled in Broome for the North West Seminar 14th May 2021.
