Legoland Malaysia to expand with new Sea Life Aquarium
The operators of the Legoland Malaysia Resort have advised that the attraction is to expand with the opening of the Sea Life Malaysia Aquarium in the fourth quarter of this year.
The two-storey aquarium, spanning 2,123 metre², will feature 25 exhibition tanks and 11 marine habitats, with environments including fresh water, coast, coral reefs and sea cave.
The attraction will feature nine different habitat zones: Shoaling Ring, Malaysia Rainforest, Rock Pool, Seahorses, Tropical Stingray Bay, Coral Reef, Jellies, Ocean View and Ocean Tunnel.
Being developed by Themed Attractions Resorts & Hotels Sdn Bhd at a cost of RM50 million (US$12 million), the aquarium is located next to three landmarks, the Legoland Theme Park, Legoland Water Park and Legoland Hotel.
Situated at Johor Bahru in southern Malaysia, the Legoland Malaysia Resort is operated under licence for Merlin Entertainments by Themed Attractions Resorts & Hotels Sdn Bhd Group (TARH).
Commenting on the expansion at a recent groundbreaking ceremony for Sea Life Malaysia, TARH Chief Executive Amir Azizan, said construction works are currently being carried out to ensure the aquarium would operate on schedule.
Azizan explained “at Legoland, what is important is continuous investment that can attract the interest of visitors, be it local or foreign.
“Up to now, we are still getting visitors from both.”
Also speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for Sea Life Malaysia, Johor Tourism, Trade and Consumerism Committee Chairman, Datuk Tee Siew Kiong advised that development of the aquarium had indicated the confidence of investors in the state’s tourism sector as well as the state government’s commitment in encouraging the development of various tourism clusters.
Tee advised “Johor has many theme parks to meet the interest of tourists, be it local or foreign, and we want Johor to become a tourist holiday destination during the holiday seasons.
“Based on a report by the Department of Statistics Malaysia, in 2016, Johor was the top destination in terms of local tourists with 7.4 million visitors, and was in third place in terms of visits by foreign tourists involving 2.6 million visitors.”
Sea Life Malaysia Aquarium will also feature a Malaysia Rainforest habitat zone, specially designed to educate visitors and tourists on Malaysia’s local flora and fauna.
