read moreThe latest in a growing number of synthetic surface playing fields in metropolitan Sydney has been opened at Blackman Park in the suburb of Lane Cove West.
The $7.5 million project has included the massive installation of a 19,500 metres2 surface comprising two dual football/rugby fields with AFL line markings that required to meet the requirements of FIFA 1 Star, IRB Regulation 22 and AFL/Cricket Australia requirements.
The Lane Cove Council and the North Surburbs Football Association expect that the new fields will not only reduce the closure of fields during wet weather but also increase the number of hours that the fields can be accessed by local sporting clubs.
A new track around the perimeter of the entire park also provides an opportunity for members of the community to enjoy walking and running along boardwalks and shared pathways.
A former landfill site that was subject to ongoing settlement, the project involved an engineering solution from installer TEAM Sports. TEAM Sports used piled footings between 10 and 28 metres deep for the concrete support slab with a subsurface drainage system above the concrete slab for collection and disposal of stormwater from the playing field.
The concrete was then overlaid with synthetic surface ‘Hybrid 60’ with a shock pad which meets the requirements of the ‘One Turf’ concept advance by world football governing bodfy FIFA, World Rugby and AFL/Cricket Australia.
To accommodate the different sports being played on the new surfaces, PILA goalposts were installed for rugby, football and AFL.
To protect the synthetic surface, the footings, hinge bases and ground sleeves of the goal posts were engineered to work with the turf system used for the field.
PILA sport has extensive experience working with the turf industry on both natural and synthetic fields and the Blackman Park project saw the Sydney-based company provide 12 metre/8metre competition level AFL goal posts, two sets of 12 metre competition level rugby union/league goal posts, and two sets of senior semi-permanent football goal posts with off-field storage.
