Looking recreate spectator experiences of earlier times and to increase crowd numbers, Perth’s Optus Stadium is to introduce a three-tiered grassed area for the Test cricket match between Australia and Pakistan next month.

To be known as the ‘West Test Hill’, the feature, able to host up to 500 spectators at a time, will replace four bays of seating at the 60,000-seat venue for the rebranded ‘West Test’ between Australia and Pakistan from 14th to 18th December.

With Optus Stadium having struggled to attract big crowds for international cricket - with just 42,723 attending last year’s match over five days against the West Indies - it is hoped the new activation will bring a bit of Perth’s iconic WACA Ground to the new venue, making it more attractive for spectators.

Planned as an annual experience at Optus Stadium, the grass bank, which will include a family area with games for children and shaded seating spaces for fans, is being sponsored by NRMA Insurance.

Introducing the concept, Cricket Australia General Manager of Events and Operations, Joel Morrison advised “international cricket in Perth has always been one of the great events of the Australian summer.

“The ‘West Test’ will take this to another level combining world-class action on the field with brilliant experiences for fans within the stadium.

“The historic rivalry between Australia and Pakistan has been rekindled since our long-awaited tour to Pakistan last year so there is no better way to launch men’s international cricket this summer via the West Test in one of the world’s great cities.”

WA Cricket Association (WACA) Chief Executive, Christina Matthews added “the West Test will give Western Australians something to be proud of - women’s and men’s Test matches that feel uniquely ours and showcase our brilliant stadia to the world.

“The first step in the transformation of our men’s Test is The Hill, providing WA cricket fans with a new way to experience Australia’s clash with Pakistan at our world-class Perth Stadium. We look forward to working with CA and all partners in the game to continue developing The West Test event as we move towards series against India and England in coming years.”

Previous cricket activations at Optus Stadium have included the ‘Boundary Beach Club’, introduced in 2019, which featured a 14-metre long pool.

Replaced by Optus Stadium as Perth’s venue for Test cricket, the WACA Ground is currently being redeveloped as a ‘boutique’ 10,000 capacity venue.
