read moreThe Norwood, Payneham and St Peter’s Council has announced that the $24 million plan to redevelop its Payneham Memorial Swimming Centre is to go ahead.
Located in Felixstow in the east of Adelaide’s metropolitan area, the redevelopment aims to create an exciting aquatic park for swimmers, families and the wider community.
Set to take approximately 18 months to complete, the redevelopment will deliver a 50 metre pool and an all-season 25 metre pool with disability access ramps to facilitate the increased use of the existing facilities along with high platform waterslides and water play areas.
First endorsed in 2017 as part of the Norwood, Payneham & St Peter’s Council Swimming Centres Strategy, Mayor Robert Bria said the redevelopment will also boost the local economy by creating jobs and a direct spend on construction.
Mayor Bria advised “while the Centre is much-loved, it is also desperately in need of major work, having been constructed in 1968.
“This investment will make a huge difference to people who use the centre making it even more popular given the exciting new features, including the high platform waterslides.”
The estimated cost is $24 million and has been made possible by a $5.6 million grant through the South Australia Government’s Local Government Infrastructure Partnership Program.
Following a $500,000 investment by the Council in the last financial year, it will complete funding with $16.5 million in 2022/23.
Work is expected to start in the coming months with completion due for the 2023/24 swimming season.
