Fitness Australia endorses Sport Australia’s Position Statement on Physical Literacy

Fitness Australia endorses Sport Australia’s Position Statement on Physical Literacy
October 16, 2019

Fitness Australia has joined sporting organisations in endorsing Sport Australia’s newly released national Position Statement on Physical Literacy.

Backing the move to prioritise the health and wellbeing of Australians, Fitness Australia sees the Position Statement as a commitment to help all Australians, especially children, bring out their best through physical activity.

Advising of Fitness Australia’s backing the importance of the Australian Physical Literacy Framework, Chief Executive, Barry Elvish stated “Fitness Australia enthusiastically endorses the Australian Physical Literacy Framework and supports the inherent philosophy that physical fitness is only one aspect of an individual’s holistic wellbeing that encompasses their physical, psychological, social and cognitive whole.

"The Framework has relevance for all Australians and acknowledges an individual’s life journey taking into account their demographics, abilities and settings.”

Sport Australia’s Position Statement on Physical Literacy includes a commitment to “improving the lives of all Australians through sport and physical activity”, stating that “we want more Australians moving more often because we know the enormous benefits to our health and wellbeing - physically, socially, psychologically and cognitively.

“Success depends on generational change, with an emphasis on young Australians. Today’s environment and increasingly sedentary lifestyles mean many children are missing out on learning fundamental movement skills, like how to run, throw, kick, catch or jump. This is a vital first step in developing the physical literacy required to get Australians moving more.

“Physical literacy is about developing knowledge and behaviours that give children the motivation and confidence to enjoy active lifestyles. Establishing active habits in children sets them on the path to happier and healthier lives, paving the way for a more productive Australia.”
