Eden Park to host ESI’s first New Zealand Applied Crowd Science course

Eden Park to host ESI’s first New Zealand Applied Crowd Science course
November 14, 2024

Event Safety Institute has announced that experienced safety professional and trainer Roderick van Gelder will deliver Professor Keith Still’s world renowned three-day course ‘Applied Crowd Science’ in New Zealand.

The three-day course will be hosted at Auckland stadium, Eden Park from 17th-19th March 2025.

ESI will deliver its accredited level 5 course on open registration. Everyone involved in Crowd Management, be it at festivals, sporting events, busy transport hubs, shopping centres, and public mass gatherings is welcome to register.

This course was developed by Professor G. Keith Still and has been delivered to safety professionals around the globe. It comes with the book Applied Crowd Science and access to his online Crowd Science community, including the whole course in e-learning form.

The course Applied Crowd Science is provided in Australia and New Zealand by the teachers of the Event Safety Institute under a unique license from Professor Still.

Professor Still notes “If you are responsible for the safety in public areas, you must be able to apply principles and insights to the field of Crowd Science.”

This statement is hard to deny. Crowd Safety is central to event planning and the considerations to be made when choosing, designing and assessing the safety of an event location. All those involved in a private role or a public responsibility must be able to understand which risks play a role and how to deal with the specific safety risks surrounding crowds.

Purpose of the course
Developing more awareness about the behaviour of crowds and individuals in the crowd, and their reactions to certain developments. The course also gives insight into how public behaviour can be modelled and how certain techniques that contribute to public safety can be applied.

Learning goals: After completing the course, the participant can:

  • Recognise dangerous situations for planning and assessing events (Crowd risk analysis);
  • Understand mass behaviour in the complex and built environment, under normal circumstances and in emergencies;
  • Model an event in phases (inflow, circulation, outflow) and recognise factors of influence (design, information and management);
  • Perform risk analyses for planning, designing and managing areas where crowds gather and move;
  • apply guidelines for managing audience movements for various types of locations;
  • articulate which factors determine the risks and safety of crowds.

When you register with three or more, there is a discount of 20% on the registration fee. If you’re interested, read further on the event registration page.
