Community AFL returns in Victoria

Community AFL returns in Victoria
July 30, 2021

AFL Victoria has advised that community competitions will return across the state this weekend, with the Victorian Government having eased Coronavirus restrictions as of Wednesday.

Welcoming the return of competition, Brad Scott, Head of AFL Victoria, advised “AFL Victoria welcomes the Victorian Government’s announcement that lockdown will be lifted, which means community football is back across the state from this weekend, from Auskick through to senior club football.

“With 90 leagues across the state, more than 170,000 registered players, tens of thousands of volunteers, umpires and coaches can now get back to their local clubs and participate, which is fantastic for everyone involved in our game.

“While it is great that football is back, not having spectators allowed does create challenges and we will continue to work closely with the government and health authorities to advocate for what community football needs, while the health and safety of everyone remains a priority.

“We urge Victorians to adhere to the Government’s rules regarding spectators, which will help ensure we can get crowds back at community football soon.

“I would like to thank the Victorian Government for acknowledging and recognising AFL Victoria’s submission on behalf of community football, regarding easing of restrictions.”

Key changes for community sport as of this week:

  • Open for all ages, training and competition. Density quotient of 1 person per 4 square metres applies
  • Limited to minimum number of people required to participate in and facilitate the activity (i.e. players, coaches)
  • Spectators not allowed (excludes people necessary for events such as teachers, instructors, trainers, coaches, umpires, carers, parents and guardians)
  • Travel restrictions lifted

AFL Victoria is continuing to work closely with the Victorian Government and will provide leagues and clubs with as much information as possible.

AFL Victoria also advised that independent leagues are ultimately responsible for determining the approach they will take regarding how COVID-related interruptions impact their seasons, and will communicate details with their stakeholders.

Earlier lockdowns have seen the elite VFL competition reduced to 14 rounds.
