IHRSA report shows China as the fastest growing fitness market in the Asia-Pacific region
November 30, 2018

The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) has just released The IHRSA Greater China Health Club Report, produced in collaboration with Deloitte China. This research publication contains an in-depth analysis of the fitness industry in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan along with a snapshot of leading health club companies in the region.

“Along with Hong Kong, China’s top 10 cities are among the fastest growing fitness markets in the Asia-Pacific region,” said Melissa Rodriguez, IHRSA's senior research manager.

“The IHRSA Greater China Health Club Report is an essential resource to better understand the size and scope of the fitness industry as well as opportunities for growth.”

The health club market in China is among the largest in world. On mainland China, the combined revenue from the top 10 cities ranks fourth among all global markets at $3.9 billion in annual revenue (USD), while the number of club members ranks ninth in the world at 4.5 million. Opportunities remain for the health club industry in China as the market has one of the lowest penetration rates among developed countries. Only 2.98% of the Chinese belong to a health club.

“While the health club market in China is among the largest in the world, increased awareness of club offerings along with product differentiation may help improve member penetration rates in the country,” said John Holsinger, IHRSA’s director of the Asia-Pacific.

“The ChinaFit/IHRSA Management Forum brings together club operators and other industry stakeholders to share cutting-edge management concepts as well as explore current and future fitness trends.”

The IHRSA Greater China Health Club Report is divided into the following sections:
•    Preface: This part of the report provides a qualitative view of the health club market trends in the Asia-Pacific region.
•    Asia-Pacific Market Overview: This section summarises topline statistics, including club count, number of memberships, market size, penetration rates, and market potential per market.
•    Market Reports: Refer to this section for an in-depth examination of the health club market in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, including an analysis of the health club market, competition, industry prospects and trends, and overall economic indicators.
•    Appendix: This section contains a snapshot of leading club companies in Greater China as well as infographic insights on the region.
