Bayswater Waves welcomes Waterwise status

Bayswater Waves welcomes Waterwise status
January 3, 2019

The Bayswater Waves aquatic centre’s recent recognition as a Waterwise facility came as a result of major refurbishment works completed as of last January.

The refurbishment of the 20-year-old centre, undertaken as part of a 10-year upgrade and maintenance plan, saw improvements to it outdoor pool and grandstand, the addition of new pool boiler and waterslide, earthing in the indoor pool and a new chemical storage shed.

The facility, run by the City of Bayswater, also installed sub-meters and began closer monitoring of its water use to proactively identify leaks.

It has also made upgrades in its changing rooms with water-efficient showerheads and push-button taps now installed.

As a result, the Western Australian Water Corporation and LIWA Aquatics recognised the centre as part of the Waterwise Aquatic Centre Program, which included 39 centres across WA.

Bayswater Mayor Dan Bull said the city was proud to see the refurbishment works be recognised as part of the program, stating “creating a more environmentally sustainable future for everyone in our community is incredibly important to the City of Bayswater, that’s why we’ve been working to ensure all of our facilities adopt environmentally friendly practices in any way that they can.”

The key factors of a water management plan that need to be demonstrated to achieve Waterwise endorsement are:

• Read meters (and any sub-meters) on a daily basis and record water use to identify anomalies
• Include leak detection as part of the daily meter reading inspections and report and repair these issues when observed
• Display water saving materials such as posters and stickers around your centre to promote waterwise behaviours
• Reduce showerhead flow rates to a minimum of 9L/minute or less
• Reduce hand basin tap flow rates to 4.5L/minute or less
• Ensure cleaners use a broom or a mop to clean floors in change-rooms
• Complete backwashing based on pressure rather than timed backwashing
• Ensure irrigation is compliant with watering rosters.
