2022 saw a huge increase in demand for training facilities and specialist sport services, resulting in the AIS hosting 171 camps for 28 sports and almost double the athletes and staff compared to pre-COVID times in 2019.
2023 has also got off to a busy start at the Australian Institute of Sport with Australia’s national netball team - the Australian Diamonds - on site in Canberra for a week-long camp ahead of this month’s Netball Quad Series in South Africa.
Netball is one of 15 sports set to visit the AIS in January 2023 to train as well as access other on-site services, including specialist sports medicine, recovery, strength and conditioning, engineering and sports technology.
The Australia national netball team - the Australian Diamond - are on site in Canberra for a week-long camp ahead of this month’s Netball Quad Series in South Africa.
Australian Sports Commission Chief Executive Kieren Perkins enthused “It’s great to start the year with plenty of activity at the Australian Institute of Sport, especially after a busy and successful previous 12 months.
“It’s an exciting time for Australian sport and I’m proud of the role the AIS is playing in helping to prepare our athletes and coaches.
“It’s pleasing to see the Diamonds in such good form and I’m looking forward to supporting the team later this month as they seek to defend their Netball Quad Series crown.”
Perkins attended one of the Diamonds’ training sessions while the team was in Canberra, touching base the players as well as Head Coach Stacey Marinkovich who recently took part in the inaugural AIS Coach Summit Program designed to enhance coaching connections and collaboration among the nation’s national head coaches.
The Netball Quad Series will begin on 22nd January with Australia to face England in its first match in Cape Town.
