Arafura Games Sporting Program Announced

Northern Territory Minister for Sport and Recreation Karl Hampton has launched the sporting program and announced the opening of registration for the 2011 Arafura Games, to be held from 7th to 14th May, 2011 in Darwin.

Minister Hampton explained "in less than six months Darwin will come alive with more than 4,000 athletes for the 2011 Arafura Games.

"Today I am pleased to announce the official program for the games, which features 20 sports, including four that are part of the Oceania Paralympic Championships.

"I am also excited to announce that the new sport for the 2011 Arafura Games is Cricket Twenty20."

The 2011 Arafura Games will, for the first time, include Twenty 20 Cricket, Minister Hampton stating that "Twenty 20 Cricket is one of the fasting growing sports in the world and will be sure to attract some diverse teams from across Australia and the Asia-Pacific."

Minister Hampton said the games were shaping up to be the best yet, adding "the Arafura Games have a growing international reputation as a tournament for emerging athletes, with the 2009 Games attracting competitors from more than 42 countries.

"The last games saw more than 4000 elite athletes travel from as far as Ireland and Iran to compete and train in Darwinâs top-shelf facilities and enjoy our famous friendly atmosphere, pumping more than $5 million into the Territory economy."

The full sporting program for 2011 includes: Athletics and Paralympics athletics, Basketball, Boxing, Cricket, Football, Golf, Hockey, International Life Saving, Muay Thai, Sepak Takraw, Shooting (Clay Target, IPSC and ISSF), Squash, Swimming and Paralympic Swimming, Table Tennis and Paralympic Table Tennis, Tenpin Bowling, Triathlon, Volleyball, Weightlifting and Paralympic Powerlifting.

The Arafura Games is a week long, International, multi-sport competition held biennially in Darwin and managed by the Northern Territory Government.

The Games began in 1991 as the Arafura Sports Festival with 1,500 athletes from seven countries competing in 13 sports. In 2009, over 2,500 athletes represented more than 40 countries, with competition in 27 sports.

Competing countries inlcude Brunei Darussalam, China, Fiji, French Polynesia, Hong Kong (China), Indonesia, Japan, Macau (China), Malaysia, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste, Chinese Taipei (China) and Vietnam.

In marketing the Games, Minister Hampton added âI am continuing to work hard to promote the games to our regional neighbours, and our overhaul of Arafura Stadium will see an even bigger Games in 2011."
