Alcohol banned for rugby league fields in Christchurch

Alcohol banned for rugby league fields in Christchurch
March 13, 2020

A permanent alcohol ban for rugby league playing fields has been backed by Christchurch City Council.

The Council agreed at a meeting yesterday (Thursday 12th March) that the ban, which was recommended by a three-person Hearings Panel last month, should go ahead.

It will be introduced this year for rugby league fields and adjoining areas, such as playgrounds and car parks, while they are in use for the sport from April to August.

A temporary alcohol ban was introduced by the Council as a trial last year following a request by Canterbury Rugby League (CRL) which had been dealing with alcohol-related problems happening on the sidelines.

CRL found the temporary ban was helpful, leading to positive changes in behaviour and making the fields more family-friendly.

Community consultation on the proposed Alcohol Restrictions in Public Places Bylaw amendment to allow a permanent ban received majority support, and Canterbury District Health Board, Sport Canterbury, Accident Compensation Corporation, and the Health Promotion Agency also supported the proposal.
