read moreSunday 31st July is set to be a major day for parks and the environment – with the day marking World Ranger Day and Australia’s National Tree Day.
World Ranger Day is celebrated around the world on 31st July each year, celebrating the work undertaken by environmental, park and wildlife rangers to protect the world’s natural and cultural treasures.
Promoted through the International Ranger Federation and The Thin Green Line Foundation, the day also commemorates rangers killed or injured in the line of duty.
Parks Victoria Chief Executive Bradley Fauteux is an enthusiastic backer of World Ranger Day, stating “this is a wonderful opportunity for us to acknowledge rangers and other field staff who do such a variety of important work here and around the world to protect our natural environments and native animals and plants.”
Parks Victoria will also be lining with Friends of the Prom to mark this year’s National Tree Day on Sunday with a joint planting project at Wilsons Promontory National Park.
Parks Victoria Area Chief Ranger Brett Mitchell says tree planting is a great community activity as it enables people of all ages and backgrounds to work together on something that’s local and presents a long lasting benefit for the park.
Mitchell stated “we would like to welcome as many participants as possible to converge on Tidal River and help plant as many indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses. This will help restore the native vegetation in the Tidal River campground for the benefit of visitors and native animals and birds.”
Created by Planet Ark National Tree Day and Schools Tree Day (marked on Friday 29th July) are Australia's largest community tree-planting and nature care event.
Sponsored by Toyota Australia, Tree Day will this year be celebrating 20 years of connecting local environments and communities with nature.
Since starting in 1996, Tree Day has seen more than 3.8 million people planting 22.3 million trees and plants across Australia.
