read moreThe organisers of the 2018 World's Largest Swimming Lesson (WLSL) event have revealed that more than 700 waterparks, pools and swim schools in 29 countries took part in the event over a 24-hour period on Thursday 21st June.
Managed by the World Waterparks Association (WWA), the ninth edition of the World's Largest Swimming Lesson again sought to provide children and parents with exposure to life-saving water safety skills while building awareness about the critical importance of teaching children to swim to help prevent drowning.
Program organisers are working to ‘connect the dots’ between the real risk of childhood drowning, the need for basic water competency skills and the fact that parents must remain vigilant at all times when supervising children in and around water.
WWA highlight that childhood drowning remains the second leading cause of unintended death for children under 14 and more drowning and near-drowning accidents take place in June (early summer in the northern hemisphere) than any other month.
Amanda Beard, Olympic Gold Medalist, mother and WLSL spokesperson advises "research shows participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among children aged one to four years.
Yet many kids don't receive formal swimming or water safety training."
Lenny Krayzelburg, Olympian and WLSL spokesperson added “drowning is preventable and, ensuring every child learns to swim is a powerful step toward prevention. We want families to know the proper precautions to take in and around the water."
The World's Largest Swimming Lesson™ was launched by the World Waterpark Association in 2010 as a platform to build awareness about the fundamental importance of teaching children to swim to prevent drowning.
Each year, WLSL events provide more than 20,000 hours of water safety training in a single day. Since its inception, more than 236,000 children and adults have participated in WLSL lessons.
