18-hole golf course to be retained at Melbourne’s Albert Park

18-hole golf course to be retained at Melbourne’s Albert Park
February 20, 2018

Parks Victoria has today confirmed there will be no changes to the size of the Albert Park golf course, with initial community feedback on the Albert Park Master Plan showing overwhelming support for the retention of the 18-hole course.

Although the master plan will be finalised in the coming months, the significant show of community support for an 18-hole course, received during the consultation process, has enabled Parks Victoria to make an early announcement regarding the future of the course.

Held over nine weeks, and with more than 2000 submissions received, the community consultation period also revealed strong support for additional components of the draft plan, including:

• A new lake promenade that will extend the current 4.7-kilometre trail to five kilometres, and will feature new picnic and play areas, and fitness stations
• Additional lighting around the lake promenade to enable early evening walkers and runners to feel more comfortable to use the path, especially in the darker winter months
• New plantings that will provide shade, shelter and habitat, and to help to cool the city
• Greater sharing of fields and pavilions, the use of synthetic surfaces and programming of sports in order to assist in addressing increasing demand

Commenting on the future of the golf course, Parks Victoria Chief Operating Officer, Simon Talbot, advised “we know that Albert Park is treasured by many local people, for walking, dog walking, sport and family gatherings. We have taken this opportunity to hear the views of people on the proposals in the draft master plan.

“We are delighted with the significant feedback that has been received - Parks Victoria is currently analysing all the feedback and will prepare a consultation report as the next step.”

“We are looking forward to collaborating on the future of golf at Albert Park with Golf Victoria, Golf Australia and the broader community.

Golf Victoria Chief Executive Simon Brookhouse added “the future of the 18-hole golf course at Albert Park is secure.

“Golf Victoria and Parks Victoria will work together to ensure that the Albert Park golf facilities remain relevant to the community - now and in the future.”

Situated just three kilometres from Melbourne’s city centre, Albert Park provides 225 hectares of parkland, including a 45-hectare lake and extensive sports fields., used by more than six million people each year.

With Melbourne’s population of 4.6 million expected to increase to seven million by 2042, the master plan will set a 25-year vision for Albert Park to ensure it can continue to provide for the health and wellbeing of Melburnians and visitors.

Following the early release of this community feedback, Parks Victoria will continue to formally collate all responses received, and work to develop the final version of the Albert Park Master Plan, which will be ratified by the Parks Victoria board in the coming months.
