Xtend Barre Workout: a fitness success story
The Xtend Barre Workout, a fusion of Pilates and dance designed to impart co-ordination, rhythm and cardiovascular fitness, has been one of the fitness success stories of the year.
Developed in the USA, the 55-minute Xtend Barre workout, featuring floor work, bar work, ballet manoeuvres and weights, was launched in Australia in November 2011.
Since then, the business has grown to include 30 licensed facilities and nine stand-alone Xtend Barre studios with the free standing locations growing from two to nine in the last year and set to grow further, to 15 by May 2014.
In addition, there are four licensed facilities in New Zealand, with the first free standing location Xtend Barre Wellington, due to open in the New Year, while there are 10 licenced facilities across Japan, China, Hong Kong and Indonesia.
The Xtend Barre Workout was created and is owned by Andrea Rogers, a professional dancer and choreographer since the age of 18.
Having become a Pilates instructor in the early 2000s, Rogers was committed to the principles of Pilates principles (stabilisation, concentration, control, flow, breath and precision) and observed the long-term results in her Pilates clients.
However, in an effort to provide cross training and seek better results for her clients, Rogers began to incorporate dance elements and music into her Pilates sessions in order to offer challenges in coordination, rhythm, and cardiovascular fitness.
By raising her Pilates clients to a vertical position, and diversifying their range of motion, Rogers found greater results by offering Xtend Barre than by maintaining a routine of Pilates alone.
The Xtend Barre principles that Rogers developed are based on a multi-level class geared to challenge bodies of any age, gender, or fitness background. Xtend Barre exercises can be modified for beginners, prenatal clients or clients with injuries, and can also be amplified for advanced clients that are looking for an extreme challenge.
In Australia, Xtend Barre's development is based on the careful placement of Xtend Barre free standing locations while licensed facilities are predominately designed for regional areas.
