read moreThe 2024/25 round of the Western Australian Sport and Recreation Events Funding Program has given a financial boost to 35 local events – which will share in $1,193,119.
Administered by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, the program supports sport and active recreation organisations to plan, secure and deliver sport and mass participation events in Western Australia.
The recipients are staging events which involve a varied mix of activities and sports such as running, swimming, surfing, skating, wrestling, water polo, tenpin bowling, kiteboarding, badminton, and cycling.
Swimming Mermaids have received $49,300 for their Swim Taalinup Goorbilyup - Blackwood River Augusta. Swimming Mermaids exists to encourage people, and in particular, women, to engage in physical activity through swimming together.
The Australian Deaf Sports Federation also received funding to create a business case for hosting the Australian Deaf Games in WA and Pride Western Australia received funding to produce a bid book for Perth's application to host the Gay Games.
Funding in this program can be used towards helping organisations develop a strategic event plan or an event tender bid, but most applicants use the grants to support running a local, national or international pinnacle event, or a mass public participation event.
In regional Western Australia, the funding can provide support to conduct high level event competition at a state, national or international level or sporting initiatives outside of Perth.
Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister, David Templeman enthused "I am delighted to announce more than $1 million towards local, national and international sport and recreation events.
"Sport is great for fostering community wellbeing, as well as individual mental health and I am committed to supporting as many sporting events as possible."
