As a not-for profit organisation, Royal Life Saving Society WA relies on donations from members of the community to help it in implementing its lifesaving programs.
To help raise funds for its programs and for messages on water safety to reach the wider Western Australian community, volunteers will be at railway stations across metropolitan Perth, along with mascot Quackers the duck, collecting donations.
Described as Royal Life Saving Society WA’s “signature fundraising event”, the Society urges members of the Western Australian community to “dig deep and make a donation to assist us in continuing our vital swimming, water safety and drowning prevention education across our state.”
Royal Life Saving Day aims:
• For all Western Australians to possess water safety, swimming, survival and rescue skills.
• To eliminate toddler drowning.
• To have trained lifesavers and first responders in every community.
• For safer pools, rivers, lakes and dams.
• To support for victims and families impacted by a drowning incident.
Royal Life Saving Day is held against a backdrop of there having been 37 drowning deaths recorded in Western Australia during the 2015/16 financial year, with each of these representing a family and community deeply impacted both emotionally and physically in the most tragic way by the loss of a family member or friend.
Royal Life Saving Society WA Chief Executive Peter Leaversuch explains “every drowning death is preventable, and with your support we can spread the message that ‘Everyone Can Be A Lifesaver!’, whether it be through learning first aid and CPR, learning to swim, or simply giving up some of your time to support our work to prevent drowning.”
