The Wanangkura Stadium Gym has reopened having been closed as a large-scale refurbishment was undertaken during August.

Residents of South Hedland and the surrounding Pilbara region can now make use of the improved fitness facilities since the Town of Port Hedland-operated gym reopened on 18th September.

The renovation has increased the site’s floor space by about 30% and added brand-new equipment to the facility.

Explaining that said the gym’s expansion was a long time coming given how much membership numbers had grown over the years, Town of Port Hedland Manager of Recreation And Leisure Services, Cheye Hill stated “we’ve substantially grown in the last four years, our membership numbers have grown from less than a thousand to at peak two thousand.

“This has created a need to provide a little bit more space and overall a better experience for our members with new and fully updated equipment in line with industry trends.”

Hill said that given the increase in memberships since it first opened, the gym could get overcrowded which was why the decision to expand was made, adding “luckily enough we are a 24-hour gym, so that does spread it out a bit, but during peak times there would certainly be times when it was overcrowded.

“Especially Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights.”

The refurbishment has expanded the gym by around 120sqm and added modern Technogyym equipment which Hill says allows for a more efficient gym layout.
