Vandalism closes Port Hedland’s Wanangkura Stadium

Vandalism closes Port Hedland’s Wanangkura Stadium
February 15, 2013

Wanangkura Stadium has been closed following overnight vandalism (Thursday 14th February) which included graffiti being sprayed on external facades along with damage to doors and vending machines at the YMCA-managed facility.

Town of Port Hedland Deputy Mayor George Daccache expressed his disappointment at the actions of the individuals responsible for the vandalism, but praised the prompt response and co-operation of the South Hedland Police and the Town's staff.

Councillor Daccache stated "the CCTV cameras at the Stadium have assisted police in identifying numerous suspects, thanks to the excellent quality and clarity of the CCTV footage.

"The South Hedland Police is currently reviewing all CCTV footage to determine the details of the crime, and are keeping staff at the Town and YMCA updated.

"Like the community, I am not impressed at what has happened and the actions and lack of respect from a few individuals have caused the wider community to become frustrated."

Councillor Daccache appealed to any witnesses who may have information on the crime to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Wanangkura Stadium is set to reopen tomorrow from 8am and resume normal operations.

Since its opening midway through last year, the Stadium and has become a popular community sport and recreation facility, with the number of residents using the facility continuing to increase.
